Mia Oberländer - If Comics Were Hot Stuff

On that lovely day, March 18, 2022, we discovered Mia Oberländer’s first comic,*Anna*. Since then, the spell has never been broken. There was the story, of course, full of departures from convention and narrative wit. And then there were the drawings. The German artist, who was unknown to us at the time, revealed to our astonished eyes her graphic style unlike any other, where simplicity formed a bond with exuberance. From these two opposites, Anke Feuchtenberger’s student manages to forge a unique artistry by relying on minimalist lines and distorted shapes. On top of that, she brings an extraordinary mastery of composition, a deceptively innocent yet deeply human touch, and colors with sharp contrasts. Transforming the minimal into the abundant, Mia Oberländer emerges as the prophet of a new era.
