The duo of illustrator Simon Bournel-Bosson and journalist Maxime Gueugneau set out to discover an exceptional humus: the "Diagonal of Emptiness", a rather unsavoury name for a quarter of France's territory. Indeed, this fictitious line - debatable and disputed - joins together sparsely populated areas along an almost continuous route from the Ardennes to the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. This earned it the disdain and profound ignorance of the rest of France. The aim was twofold: to fight against the lack of knowledge of these territories and, of course, to have as much fun as possible. So Simon and Maxime braved the winds and tides, but above all the freeway service areas, the dodgy bars, the student parties, the pickle sellers, the nuns' corpses, the sandwich shops, the tex-mexes, the ghosts and the sacred can stores, to convince themselves that there was nothing "empty" about this diagonal. In four stages from Saint-Dizier to Pau, over a distance of almost 1,000km, via Auxerre, Commentry, Vézelay, Montluçon, Bar-sur-Aube, Tulle, Uzerche, Tarbes and Lourdes, the two loulous had quite a few adventures, which they are happy to recount to us in text and pictures. Initially published in Kiblind magazine during the 2016-2017 season, the four reports that make up the book have been revised, corrected and expanded with new texts, juicy info and exclusive illustrations. All printed by hand at Atelier Kiblind on a Risography machine.
