Freak City
For Freak City from Bordeaux, the '80s were not only the decade of his birth, they were also the ones that forged his outlook, his drawing and his philosophy of life. The co-founder of the Mondo Zero collective draws on the bangs of this era, which saw skateboarding, punk and underground comics flourish, to nourish an art where monsters and mutants take over the city. With thick black lines and dazzling colors, he traces this world on the other side, the one that gives birth to the bizarre and the beautiful with the same salvific stroke of the axe. His images, which can be found as if by chance on record sleeves, on walls or in numerous magazines and alternative editions, are those of an emancipatory catharsis, a festive chaos that throws everything out of whack to start afresh. Rip it up and start again, as they say.
