A resident of Lyon by choice, Magda Chmielowska does nothing but amaze us with her images of soft colors and rounded shapes. So we let ourselves go, believing we’ve stepped into a world of a thousand wonders where nothing could possibly happen to us. Our first steps carry us into a dream of fabulous vistas and poetic distortions. There we encounter love, joy, and beauty, but don’t be fooled: the Polish illustrator is often speaking to us about the real world. Yet, intoxicated by the nectar of beauty, we stumble unwittingly into the inequalities, injustices, and desolations of a present that Magda Chmielowska observes with precision. The illusion is complete, and the Warsaw artist’s Machiavellian plan has worked without a hitch.
